Mine behaved a bit like that and refused to work again until it was plugged into to the diag machine and all the errors cleared and reset, a cheap fix - were the dealer not 100 miles away!
Its a 2002 FSE 400, I'm in the UK. All I know is that is what the dealer told me and the fix was cheap so I believe him! I tried un plugging the battery but no joy. I used to have an Alfa Romeo, that used to do weird things with the ECU incl limp home mode!

Update: Bike now running fine. The ECU was full of error codes and shut down un necessary functions ie the engine! The shop cleared the computer and remapped it, she's running and starting much better now! The dealer recommends having the bike plugged into a proper GG computer once a year to...
OK got my 400 running nicely after doing the valve shims, but it didnt cure the occasional stalling (prob optimistic anyway!) and now its stalled seriously - it wont start at all! the fuel pump isnt priming, Ive checked the relay and it is working, there is power to the pump feed but the relay...
yeah i've got the manuals, just didnt find it clear, spoke to my GG dealer ( they are really helpful) they suggest a screwdriver/plastic tubing in the plug hole. Also it is at TDC when the pick up is on the 7th tooth, but actually I'm being thick! .... I can see from the cam marks when its at...
Yep just took off the stator cover and there's no marks I can see on the flywheel, I can see the cam marks are same as the DRZ but just want to make sure the Crank shaft is in the right place and my dial gauge is way to short!!
I'll have a word with my dealer tomorrow

You can bypass the solanoid with a spanner but I doubt its that, most likely is the starter clutch
it could be a worn out starter motor, were your brushes ok? a new brush plate is about £20 A DRZ starter will fit but you'll need to drill a different hole for the post.
