Crisp might sound like a good thing but could also be on the lean side. Most 2 strokes run really well just before they seize in my experience. The objective would be to get it correctly jetted so it doesn't seize. If it seizes on the road, you may need more than just new underpants.

I used some heavy gauge cable I had lying around but I ran the earth directly from the battery to the bolt that holds the starter on.
