You should be able to push the spring down by hand.

You may need a thin 17mm wrench.

On my 2007 GG. I took a 6"x9" speaker grill and cut it to fit the opening. Looked pretty trick.

The rivets holds the spark arrestor.

Can you post pictures of the forks?

Just "tap" it out. Usually, they can be a bear to remove.
