I put studs in the spigot bolt holes instead. Also solved the problem of the spigot bolts continuously working loose.

I even look like I know what I'm doing in these photos!

Just as a follow up, new reeds fixed the issues. I think they've been in bad shape for a while based on how well it runs now.

I measured it out on my '04 and IIRC the 3L meant 3L until reserve.

I found the remainder of the broken reed in the airboot! When it initially died on me it was on a big throttle section so I wonder if it blew back through the carby and has been there ever since.

It took a bit of kicking but it'd start ok. In any case, it's a bit of a relief to find an obvious mechanical problem than the prospect of chasing down a CDI or something like that.

That's what I wanted to hear! Looking in the exhaust port and spark plug hole there appears to be no bore or piston damage, but that's hardly a comprehensive check.

I'm confident I've found the problem: Now what? Obviously replace the reeds, but I would assume a chunk of the reed is in the crankcase. Might have to split the case to get it out?

Compression feels good (unchanged) just based on the kickstart force. Haven't done a proper compression test.
