That looks like a reg/rect unit - easy and cheap to replace. Unless you have test equipment it will be tricky to isolate any other problems. I would get a replacement reg/rec and if still no spark try replacing the coil etc from a pal who has the same bike...

Update.. It appears that the important aspect when cold starting my bike is to very slowly kick it over a few times with choke on and throttle closed. Then a proper kick and she fires straight away. Rocking the bike in gear seems to have the same effect as slowly kicking it over. Those of you...
