if it is just ticking when you push the starter button is that the solenoid clicking in and out for the starter motor? the squeel is probably the fuel pump, is the starter motor turning? whats the voltage on the battery? it could be possible that someone has swapped the relays over before and...

it certainly sounds like the fuel pump relay behind the left hand side panel, that will certainly give you them problems as they are very temperamental, this weekend i have had exactly the same with mine, and also my mates .

the upgraded cogs had a bit of a worm in them to absorb kickback from th engine if it backfired on starting , i believe this was supposed to save the starter clutch from being damaged, mines been upgraded, still eats starter clutches, never heard of that part going before though

where abouts are you mate in yorkshire? i live in bedale and if you can get the bike up to me we can swap a few bits and see if we can get it running jon

pull the electrical connector off the fuel tank look at the pins inside the connection if they are ok, remove the sender unit and check the wires underneath the pins of the connection as they can corrode and give eratic running. if either look rough swap over the spade connections and change...

the other thing to check is the connection between fuel tank and wiring loom, this seems to be a week spot, and my mates 400 rang like a bag of spanners when connection is bas, infact that has happened a couple of times this year already, the connections in that part are poor and small.

hi, thats right, i had issues with mine, you would ride along then open the throttle and it seemed that the bike just wanted to die, i swapped over the relays after cleaning them, and that sorted it, two new relays, siliconed in, not had issue since. just swap them to trouble shoot.

swap the fuel pump and fan relay around, behind the left hand side panel, and see if it makes a difference,

i think the battery could have a lot to do with it, as the ecu needs 14.4v, to run properly, iu have noticed that on my 03 450fse if you are riding along and you put the lights on main beam, the power draw when it is switched on makes the bike run poor and miss for a second.
