I have one of the early FMF pipes for the 2012 and really like it. Mine is the factory "bare metal" pipes and I am not sure how much they changed them or if they did at all when they changed it to the "gnarly" for the public.
I also ride similar terrain. In fact we all three rode the same race this year, and I have never had a problem. On large rocks and trees I use a trials technique called the double blip to get over and haven't had any problems hitting.
My wife and I went to Sedona and Flagstaff for our honeymoon. I loved it out there. I'm not sure about the dirt biking but the mountain biking was awesome.
