You almost certainly have a starter problem from the way you described it. The starter has 2 springs: one to engage the starter gears and another to return the starter lever to it's stored position. On my 07 gasser the engagement spring was weak and wouldn't always push the gears together...

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I think I'm going to stick with the Green Grease on the wheel bearings and see how it does. You recommend the jet lube for the roller bearings? Does it hold up well against water and mud? Where can I find it? Once again, thanks for all the help.
