07-11 air boxes question

I am assuming that the air boxes on the 07's and later bikes are essentially the same as the 11's, am I correct with that assumption?

Now assuming I am correct, I notice that there could be some water/mud/debris get in the newer bikes airbox via at the rear of the seat/hand hold slots.

My question is, do any of youse guys put any foam in this area to deflect
the crud from getting in to the airbox. I bought some of the foam that Moose sells that, I believe, they use to put between the engine and skid plate. I cut about a 3"x8" strip and stuffed it up right where the airbox ends and the rear fender meet.

Anybody else do this????

Alan,

Thats the bulk of the air intake. I only plug it when washing the bike. I've had no more water splash problems than on my older GGs, which also had similar openings there.

When you clean the filter/air box make sure that little reed valve drain is free of mud. Extra filter oil that may drip off the filter can also stick it shut, happened to me. Also if your new to the '07+ filter setup be VERY carefull the filter/cage is seated on the airboot rim properly, feel around the entire edge of the filter and make sure the pins are inside the airboot. Its easy to miss the filter not seating right on the bottom if your not careful.

The foam I used is very porous and would probably knock down any big splash. I don't think it would impede air intake flow but not totally sure. The way I have it stuffed in there, there is still open area between the seat base and the foam. The foam is actually just meant to disperse any large run off
from the forward fender area.

Thanks for the filter tips, GMP. I will heed you advice.

+1 on the air filter seating. Especially when the filter foam is new and soft and has not yet "moulded" into shape. It gets a bit better as it ages and the squashed foam lip gets thinner. I think the locating pins on the plastic cage could do with being a bit longer, but as GMP says, take your time and slide your fingers all around to make absolutely sure of the fit.
I have no issues with stuff getting in the hand-hold/vents, but I have sealed the inner mudguard and side cover and front wiring harness entry gaps.
This airbox is not on my list of favourite things.
