200 EC losing gear box oil ?

I have a 1998 EC 200 which now is losing all it's gear box oil. There is no sign of external loss so believe it is leaking through the crank shaft seals and being burnt off ? Could this be the case and if so does any one know if you have to split the cases to replace the seals or can this be done with the crank in place ? Through the link on here I have found an owners manual but no workshop manual, any help in locating one would be much appreciated . Many thanks in advance.

Yes it sounds like your crank seal (s) are bad. You can change them without splitting the cases. I would replace both sides while you are at it because the older bikes did not come with Viton seals and the ethanol in the fuel kills them over time..

There is a (approx 2006 model) workshop manual available as a pdf file, I think. My sons and myself have used it for rebuilding engines, it is quite OK quality. I have a printed copy that I use, but I presume the file is also somewhere on my home server. I downloaded it either from this website or from Gasgas.es, I don't remember. If you are unable to locate it, I could send you a copy (provided I find the original at home).

Thanks for the replies, those and the 250 rebuild thread will be a great help .

That is my Christmas activity sorted, mulled wine, turkey sandwich and two crank seals to the workshop.

Thanks again.

I followed the 250 rebuild thread to do this but there are some differences.

The nut on the end of the crankshaft isNORMAL RIGHT HAND THREAD. There is no woodruff key as the crankshaft is splined to hold the Gear and there is no counterbalance weight.

The seal removal tool mentioned on the 250 thread made life so much easier and well worth the small price to purchase one. For the ignition side the seal is pretty small so the seal tool needs grinding each side to reduce the thickness then is works a treat.
