I bought a nice 2003 EC 250 that the owner explained was converted to a 300. I am curious if there is a way to tell if it actually has a 300 jug on it without opening it up and measuring. I dont see any markings stamped into the cylinder listing displacement externally. The only markings I see are on the back (carb side) of the cyclinder. the markings are "7196" and the letter "A". Any thoughts? Im not terribly worried about it because it runs great and I got a good deal.

Thanks!!

"If" the 7196 happens to refer to the bore it's a 300 I would guess. Because the bore should be ~72mm. But that's a huge leap :D

blueberry,
The easiest way is to check the code on the cylinder head. The code is stamped on top of the motor mount boss on the head. An EC 250 will be stamped 25E00 and an EC300 will be stamped 30E00.

Jason,

Thanks for the information. My head is stamped with an ME25-300XXXX. Any ideas how this fits? I was thinking it might be an aftermarket head but havent gotten confirmation. I suppose I should just pull the head and measure the piston.

blueberry,
The 5 digit code is stamped directly on top of the boss for the motor mount. It's not the cast number that forms a semi circle around the spark plug. See attached picture.
