2K2 timing marks

can anybody point out to me how the stator should be aligned so that the timing is correct, and how will advancing and retarding the timing effect the way the bike runs?
 
Advancing it will give you some more bottom end and mid range. Listen for pinging or detonation so you don't go too far for our fuel type. Retarding it will reduce some power. I have had good results by adding timing by rotating the timing plate 2 to 3mm.
 
are there marks on the case and on the stator plate that I can line up to see if its in the stock position though? I know for a fact my bikes motor has been completely torn down and I'd like to check the position
