Battle of the Coral Sea

Today Australia commemorates the Battle of the Coral Sea.
American naval forces along with Australian engaged in the battle against the Imperial Japanese Navy 4 - 8th of May 1942. American and Japanese losses were so great that both sides could fight no more. The Japanese press reported a somewhat overstated victory over the allied forces BUT there would become three very positive outcomes for the Allies.
Firstly the damage sustained to the Japanese Fleet would halt their invasion throughout the South Pacific. Secondly these losses would become a contributing factor towards a win for American at the Battle of Midway. Once reported by a military historian as " the most stunning and decisive blow in the history of Naval Warfare". The victory at Midway then allowed America to reach the shores of Japan and end the war in the Pacific.
Lest We Forget.

My father was in the US Navy at the Battle of the Coral Sea...he passed away last year at the age of 94. He was also involved in Okinawa, Saipan, Guadalcanal, Leyte Gulf, and several others. He also was at the signing of the Japanese surrender. He lived with my wife and I for the last 10 years and I miss him every day.

That was a special generation of people fighting together for a common cause. The things that they did were incredible. I am sorry for your loss.
