I just finnished rebuilding my home desktop PC after an attack from a Rootkit Trojan. This is a very nasty intruder that cloaks itself and is undectable by most antivirus scanners. It hides itself, its processes, and even other Trojans. Opens ports and can send info out to its creators. You can't trust what the OS is doing or showing you because its compromised. Worst is you can't get rid of it! You can detect it with a Rootkit scanner/detector, but all IT experts agree the best course of action is a complete re format and rebuild.

Keep all your stuff backed up and your security up to date.

Avoid using admin accounts for internet access.

AND, keep kids and their game sites off your PC!!

So how can a Rootkit Trojan be detected? My 5 year-old plays on the computer and I also find alot of spyware/adware. Lately the machine is slow, saw this post and makes me wonder. I defragment, run spyware programs, etc. Anything else?

Are you running XP?

Always make sure you machine is always up-to-date with the latest paches. I run CA PestPatrol on my machines. I have had no issues but I do use Firefox and not IE.
