Broken Water Pump Impeller

A guy I ride with was having weird overheating problems.
When we saw coolant in the trans oil I know it was time to tear it down, and as stated the impeller was split in half.
He did order a aluminum one to replace the plastic one.
I don't see an advantage to using a plastic one except cost savings, if you want to build a better bike their are some areas that you just don't cut corners.
I just wanted to post this so it may help others with over heating issues.

The good news is we also did a top end (same time) at 127 hours and everything looked great except the reeds were chipped at the edges.

I have a 08 and I was wondering if gasgas is still using plastic impellars with the newer bikes ?

As far as I know - GasGas no longer uses a phenolic (plastic-like) impeller - it is alloy. I believe the '08 would have the newer impeller.

I would check, there was a period in time when anything was possible. Some pre '07 bikes had alloy impellers and my '07 to my surprise had a plastic one.

Wow , THey really are all over the place with stuff aren't they.

Is there a gasket that I'll need to have on hand to replace or is it a reusable oring?

Looking at the GasGas partlists, there hasn't been a change in part number since 1996 all the way through the 2010 EC and MC's throughout the 15 yr. span. ME25610007 is the part number on the 2010 model which is the "plastic" impeller. GoFasters sells the alloy impellers, so maybe someone decided that it was a good investment to put one on before they sold it is a possibility.

the impeller is plastic in my nambo i just had it ripped apart last weekend

That's not good...

I hope GG clean out the old parts bin of these awful plastic ones...and I don't mean cleaning them out by putting them in bikes.:(

MY 04 and 08 both had plastic ones stock.

My 06 had an alloy one stock. I found out after I took it over to Les (LTR) to have some work done and asked him while he was at it to drop in one of his high flow alloy impellers.Thinking it must have a plastic one. When I came to pick up the bike he handed me the stock alloy one.

You should really check to see what you have cause it may surprise you. The stock alloy one looks pretty much like the plastic one as far as shape. Their shape don't offer as much flow as the former LTR one or the one go fasters offers now.

There was also two different types of plastic impellers. The early ones were apparantly better, you never heard of problems in the first few years. The latter green plastic was the one to look out for. Oh, and if its one thing GG should work on its the part # system. Don't take the current one too seriously.

The one we pulled out was "red".
We did replace them with the GF aluminum one, one thing I did like was the the case cover does not have to be removed to replace the water pump seal(s),
which is a spring loaded unit....that's cool.

Well, make that three types of plastic! Never heard of a red one before. The seal is a high speed ceramic/graphite interface pump seal used in industrial applications, unique to the M/C world. The higher the system pressure the tighter it seals.

My old honda CX500 had the same ceramic seal design as the GG uses. It was an expensive piece. The Yamaha vision (550 cc v-twin) used the same seal, but it cost 1/2 as much. Those were late 70's / early 80's bikes. When I first saw this in the GG, I knew that it was well designed. Like Glenn said, I don't know of anyone else currently using this. My kids' KTMs don't have as nice of a seal.
