Can an EC300 rear swing arm take a 17" 5.0 Rim?

As the title above says...

Getting an EC300 into a motard trim. Im lacing up my OEM hub on the front to a Behr 17" 3.5 and that seems fine.

Im still in search of a rear set up though.

Question is, most KTM wheels come 17" 3.5 on the front and 5.0 on the back...

Will this fit on a 2001 EC300 swing arm?

Thanks guys

I think it will work. Check the GasGas parts manuals, but I'm pretty sure the factory SMs use the same swingarm. Plus, there have been a few other conversions done by guys here with no mention of swingarm problems.

The 5" SM rim will fit no problem. It is the 160/60-17 tire that is
going to cause you problems.
I have a 4.50 rim with a 150/60-17 Continental Attack SM and it is TIGHT.

The chain slapping around is making small groove marks in the side of the tire.
I do not have a close up picture to show. But the chain is about 1/8-1/4" from
the tire just standing still.

Just my observation. Try it if you want, but, I doubt you will like it.

GMP and Slocalspode.

Thanks for the input. Nice bike there as well!

With a couple of months i'd be happy if i was at that stage.

One of the things that confuse me is the tyre coding.

Slocalspode, would i be able to fit an 150/60-17 on a 5.0 rim?

Thanks

Final drive sprocket trivia?

If your talking about SM cog sizes, im no expert, but your looking at something like 38-41 teeth?

Final Drive sprocket is a Talon. I believe that one is a 44.
I have since changed it to a 40 tooth from WRP.
Using an IronMan 14 tooth countershaft sprocket.
There are more pictures and info on my bike in
another post.
search EC250SM and you should find it.
I have also posted stuff on SuperMotoJunkie.com
same search.

I suspect you could. I do not think a 150 was made to fit
a 5.0 rim though. It might make the tire expand to fit the
rim and you may loose some lean angle. You may have to
add a lot of pressure to the tube to get the tire bead to
seat on the rim too.
I am no expert and only have experience with my set up
on my bike. I did a SuperMoto conversion to a KDX200
and used the same 4.50 rim and 150 tire that I did on the
GasGas. In fact the KDX has a tad more room between the
chain and the tire.
There are a couple of other SM owners here on the list.
You might want to see if you can find them and ask.
Good luck, Jeff

Thanks for the advice Jeff,

You've helped me out before, appreciate it!

Ive got some wet's on the wheels at the moment, but they deffo wont pass the UK MOT.

Could you help explain the tyre numbers?

I've spotted a Maxis Godspeed front tyre its a 120/70/17,

I presume now that this wont fit a 5.0 rim, i know the 17 refers to the tyre size, what does the 120/70 refer to?

Tom...

The 120, 150, 160 etc.. refers to the tire width in mm.
It is a general size reference, not an absolute requirement.
Different manufacturers make tires of various size that is
close to the listed number.
The 60, 70, 90 number is the aspect ratio. It is a percentage
of the tire width. From rim bead to tire tread.
Ex. 150/60, the tire is 60% as tall as it is wide. 150/70 is
70% as tall as wide. This too is a generalization, but the
larger the second number. The taller in diameter is the
tire.
At least that is how I understand it.
If I am wrong, maybe someone can explain it better.

i've had a 4.25 rim on my husaberg FS 550 and didn't really feel the need to go for a 5" rim.
the dunlop 208 RR 150/60R17 tire was more then sufficiant :D

Haha. Nice!

Im sure i could have gone smaller than a 5.0 rim.

Its just the set of Talon/Excel wheels i bought were an absolute steal...
