Clutch issues

Hi all

Every time I pull my clutch in and change gear it's all good, but if I try starting the bike while in gear while holding the clutch in the bike go's forward as if the clutch is doing nothing , anyone know what can cause this ? do I need to replace clutch plates/ springs, shouldn't I be able to start the bike while holding the clutch in, while in gear ?

Any help would be great.

Air in Clutch hydraulik?
Steel clutch plates in good condition, not bent?

Little forward movement whilst in gear is normal, because of oil between clutch plates.

When the engine is cold it will drag(esp if its been sitting awhile.once oil is fully warm it should start in gear but there may still be a small amount of drag.a clutch thats had a lot of abuse can distort the steels which increases drag.wear on the basket 'fingers' where the plate tabs slide in/out slightly can aggravate the problem also.you can carefully smooth with fine wet/dry sandpaper, dont get too carried away or the basket/plates will be noisier when idling in neutral.
The steels can be checked with a straight edge across the face, but try and keep the plates in the order they were, and facing the same way.if you reshuffle them and they are dished it will drag worse.think of a stack of dinner plates,if you flip the middle one you make the whole stack taller, reducing the clearance for slippage.reducing the freeplay at the lever may give you a little more 'release'

I'd look at the clutch basket fingers as well. They can get little grooves worn into them. A little filing and you can smooth them back out. Basically, the fibers can get bound up in the little grooves, preventing them from separating.

This isn't my picture or even a GasGas, but same concept:

Cheers for all the advise lads, barossi73, it makes no difference, hot / cold still the same amount of drag. I love the dinner plate analogy.

Great picture RockefellerGG, it gives me a much better idea what I'm looking for.

Sounds like a master cylinder problem. When you hold in the clutch, it bleeds past the cylinder and when you release it and pull again it works fine. This sounds like why it works when shifting, but not when held in place.

I had 2 MC's go and they both exhibited similar issues.
