hi (new to this gasgas club :). i have a 2002 ec300, i thought it ran ok, not as fierce as my mates ktm which is ok, then another mate bought a 97 ec250 which leaves mine standing. everything seems ok and we think the power valve isnt opening quick enough, does anybody know how to adjust this, or have any ideas, its as if i have the less cc bike

If you feel your bike runs good, sounds right, and the plug shows it is jetted correct, take a look at the gear ratios between the two bikes. A 250 that is geared lower (12/52 for example) may be able to push past a higher geared bike especially in the lower gears. A stock EC300 is 14/38 (I think) which is a final gear ratio of 3.42 (1 to 1) a 12/52 is 4.33 (1 to 1). the 12/52 will have more torque. A lot of other things add up to. Rider weight, expeiance with the bike, shift timing, tire condition, etc.

Keep after it, and he'll be eating your dust soon. I'll pit a properly tuned GG against orange any day...

the bikes have the same gearing, 14/48 i think, the ec250 sounds more crisp and mine next to it sounds a bit lame so was thinking the power valve isnt opening early enough,so wondered if this can be adjusted

isn't stock gearing 13/48 instead of 14/38?
maybe you meant right but spelled wrong:rolleyes:
at least, that's what my 300 had (and the 200 aswell)

Meant right, spelled wrong! That's where I need one of those new brain fart checkers, versus a spell checker! My 2003 EC300 manual shows 14/48, a 2006 manual shows 13/47. I which I could have owned one from new so I could confirm :) Some day...

It seems like many of the older bikes have had the sprokets changed to suit the rider.

Crisp sound coudl also be the exhaust packing - mine sounded so much better and performed better when I repacked it, my guess is that it had been many years.

There are many nice threads on the PV here as well as a great technical article. It seems the biggest issue is with cleanliness and basic function versus adjustment - which I don't beleive there is any. Serveral parts can become very gummed up, and bearings can be a concern. You may want to do some research on the threads to see if there is any "adjustment" or "tweaks" that people have come up with, maybe on the actuating rod. I know I am very happy with the way it operates in it's stock form, as long as it's clean, and all in good shape.
