EC300 Stator Output

Anyone know how many watts and EC puts out?

I need to run more lighting. I ran a night enduro this weekend. I had the stock headlight and a cyclops (35W) on my helmet, but would like to add another light (probably a flood mounted to the bike).

Also, for you engineering types, I want to build a circuit to automatically switch between two power sources: 1 tha ac output of the stator (primary source) and the other being a battery mounted to the bike somewhere. The idea is to run off the stator as long as it is putting out some juice, then automatically swtich to battery power if I stall the engine. It got downright scary searching for my bike in the dark at midnight in the forest. Plus, all I had to light up myself was a glow stick zip-tied to my chest protector. I also plan to carry another battery pack in my pack, but a smaller one just in case I get separated from the bike and go off an emabnkement or something. It could come in handy as I climb out

I've only owned GG bikes with the larger "true EC" ignition. This Kokusan 2-ck3produces a maximum output of 70-75W while the smaller XC/DE ignition (2-ck2) produces a lot less, probably in the 30-40W range.

You'll often hear people claim 110W for the 2-ck3 but this is not true. Trust me, I've pushed my 2-ck3 ignitions as far as they will go. I've converted mine to run at 28 Volts which pushes output to somewhere between 100-110W. This 24-32 Volt conversion used to be a very good option for night riding as you could use two 50W MR-16 bulbs connected in series on the helmet.

AC lights are getting to be yesterdays news though as HID lights will give much more light per used wattage. You can convert both Kokusan ignitions to run DC by "floating the ground". This would allow you to run a battery and at least one good HID light.

I have not converted my bike to DC yet beacuse I run an extra external stator/rotor assenbly on my bike. This allows me to use enough AC lights (300W) to be comfortable at night.

I read about the DC mod somewhere...maybe on Trail Tech's site.
I think I asked you about it on Smackover once and youindicated at that time that there was a loss of wattage over all (although with more efficient lights, that may not be an issue).

I plan to run some heated grips this winter. Do you think I could support more lights (I'd like to get the effect of 100W) + heated grips by going to DC with HID lights?

If you want both decent lights and heated grips neither the XC/DE stator or the EC stator will suffice. That is a fact.

You have two choices; try to get hold of an external Ducati Energia rotor/stator assembly from a GASGAS 300 quad or the somewhat hard to find 200W internal stator that has been used by some racers in Sweden. I think it is a made for KTM RFS unit (Electrex, Trail Tech?) that can be used on the GG bikes as well. From what I've heard it is very sensitive to overheating and works best in cold weather.

The Ducati Energia unit is very simple to install, especially if you are running the "small" XC/DE ignition. On my bike I can install or remove the whole unit in 5 minutes using an impact wrench. It is also very powerful, producing between 160-200W depending on how it's set up.The downside is availability and price.

So, do you have a custom case to go over the external rotor?

Can you wire the external rotor for dc and keep the stock AC one?

I think that'd be a nice combination. Leave the stock stuff as is and add dc to handle the extra lights when needed. I could probably run heated grips off the AC. I'll use those more. I only need the bright lights for a few nigths rides a year.

All you need for this modification can be sourced from GASGAS. If your bike has the "small" XC/DE ignition and the old counterbalancer engine cases everything will fit without modifications. If your bike has the "large" EC ignition and/or the new engine cases you will need a spacer between the ignition cover and the engine.

I've made a list of the parts that you need for this but as I'm on vacation north of Kingston, Ontario, I don't have the list with me. Instead I'll try to explain. You need the magnesium ignition cover that was used on the pre-2000 bikes. This cover holds the extra Ducati Energia stator. You will also need the rotor that goes with this cover and the special nut that holds the rotor in place.

All these parts are still used on the GASGAS 300 Quad and if you can find someone who has one and does not need lights you might be able to make a deal. I'm sure that there are several quads out there that are used for racing and don't use lights at all. These parts can also be ordered from your local GG dealer.

With the external rotor/stator assembly installed you get two separate power sources. On my bike I run the standard system at 28 Volts AC and the external system at 16 Volts AC. You can certainly run DC in the external system and keep the standard system running AC.

I will probably switch one of my systems to DC before winter starts and use some HID lights combined with regular bulbs.

Now to find the $$$.

How does all this affect the bike? Do you notice more flywheel effect?

I have the EC ignition, by the way.

You do notice an increase in flywheel effect but not that much. I like it.

Since you have the large EC ignition you will have to make a 4 mm spacer ,between the ignition cover and engine cases, to get the stator and rotor to align. You will also have to trim the tower where the stator wires are connected to the stator otherwise they will touch the flywheel.
