Engine noise when idle

Hi I'm Johan and I'm new on this forum

This is my engine sound http://youtu.be/3LbKL4ZIC5M

On the film I take the clutch in and out no difference.
Pv is already adjusted and checked.
Is this a normal sound? Sound a bit to high for me. When I rev the engine up slowly it suddenly goes to "phase" (if you understand what I mean) and the sound disappears. I found out that one clutch plate ware broken so I replace all of them. No difference in sound.

Please help Im worried. This is my first bike and I resantly bought it.

Ok so you can actually hear it's the piston?
I've ordered the size A piston is that bigger than the original piston or same?
This is the first piston replacement I'm about to do on this engine according to previous owner.
Thanks

Normally I suggest to replace the piston with this sound if it has enough running hours.

However, I have a new 2013 EC300 with 400km/650miles on it and it is making the same sound.

So I assume it's a 'normal' sound.

contradictory? :)

Johan, in short your cylinder on the rear bottom side is marked with a letter corresponding to a piston size from the factory. Most probably an A but you never know. The correct way is to measure the cylinder's wear and order the appropriate size of piston according to specs and clearances....

Yep piston slap , my 2012 made the same noise with about 35 to 40 hours on it , I ran it up to around 75 hours and changed piston , noise gone , fitted wossner piston with at least another 50 hours on it since then , still all quiet :D

If you think you have play in the basket, FIRST check the torque on the clutch hub nut to make sure it hasn't loosened (or not installed to spec). If it is within spec, then replace the parts my 07 manual calls "primary drive gear bearings AND bushing" that are under the clutch basket. Also the rubber mounts between the basket and gear mounted on the back of the basket can wear so check those too when you have the clutch out, not likely the problem in a bike 2 years old though.

My bike was making a similar noise, I thought it was the bearing under the pressure plate (manual calls it "needles bearing"). It rattled like a diesel engine with the clutch lever out, but with clutch lever pulled in the noise went away. So Mark at Gofasters looked at my video and told me what to replace. At least that fixed my bike's noise.

Also piston slap "should" go away or at least get quieter when the engine warms up. Did you find which cylinder you have, and got the right parts for the "A" or "B" cylinder? Were you able to measure it and the piston?

One other "rattle" cause always in my mind is the bellcrank hitting the inside of the case. As the RPMs come down and the governor closes, the stud on the bellcrank can hit the inside of the case. If you put the same size or smaller base gasket in this can still be (or become) a problem. Just look for a mark inside your case or see if the stud is resting on the case. Then make this mod:

good luck and welcome to the forum. hopefully someone much smarter than I will chime in

Ok so the cylinder ware marked A and I put an A piston in. I haven't measured it.

I tried to have the right side cover of on the cylinder and hold on the different parts and it did no difference in sound.

I have a bit axial play on the outer clutch basket. Only axial play nothing else.
Is that normal? The sound doesn't change when I pull the clutch lever in.

Could it be just a noisy engine or should I countinue to search?

Thanks!

I would continue to search. GasGas didn't engineer their bikes to make extra noises, but some of us put up with noises that we can't ID and don't seem to be problematic. You might try a mechanic's stethoscope and see if you can locate which area it is "noisiest" on and try to locate the noisiest spot to help you locate the cause....

Sometimes taking out the potential noisemakers (when it is safe to do so) can help isolate problems also, ie, take the clutch pack out, run it, take the hub and basket out, run it again with just a temporary start to see if the noise is still there (obviously not in gear and no pulling on the clutch lever LOL ask me how I know). Maybe even disconnect the powervalve at the bellcrank, start it for a few seconds but don't rev it. While you're in there, make sure the crankshaft nut is tight, also the flywheel. Also no play in the crankshaft. I spend a lot of time checking things that might not be wrong. If i was a real mechanic I wouldn't waste so much time solving problems!

But hey the advice you got at the beginning of this post is sound advice...If you can rule out other potential causes, then you can rest assured it is persistent piston slap and just live with it and be happy.

Or just raise your idle to 2000 RPM and the noise will go away :D

Ok so I have listened to the engine with stethoscope with not much results it's really hard to hear any differents in sound. As a guess I think it comes from behind the clutch. But the sound makes no difference with the clutch lever pulled or not pulled. Even tried with the bike in gear an let I "drag". All the time the same sound. Only changes with the engine speed. Had the clutch basket of and looked at all the parts and I can't feel no play. Ordered the bearing and bushing any way.

Top end sounds good now. The clutch noise sounds about normal they are a bit noisy, but should quiet up a lot with clutch lever in. What caused your broken clutch plate?? take a close look at complete clutch assembly,

I am remembering the video of you being concerned about the movement in the basket. I don't know if that is normal or not. I guess my point was just run the bike for a few seconds, with the basket/hub/clutch pack and bearings/bushing removed, in neutral, don't touch the clutch lever. Now there is nothing connecting the crank gear to the transmission, so it won't spin your trans which shouldn't be a problem even if the oil is out and you only run it for a few seconds to identify the noise.... If the noise is gone, THEN go after the bearings/sleeve under the basket. If the noise persists, it has nothing to do with the clutch.
