how to remove water pump seal

Im trying to remove my shift shaft on a 01 xc300. I drain the coolant, removed the water pump cover and the impeller and all the bolts for the clutch cover. But the clutch cover won't come of. Does the water pump seal have to come out, and how is it removed.

The clutch cover does not have to come off to replace the seal. It should just slide off the shaft.


On a bike that "old", I would pull the clutch cover off to inspect the water pump drive gears.
