I think I need a motor pulldown???

I was out riding tonight in a new area and it was basically single trail through rocks and loam.
I was enjoying the ride when I felt like I had a slipping rear tyre and also a weird noise.
I pulled over and investigated and all looked good. I tried to get going again and the bike was making a grinding / clutch slipping sort of sound.
Stopped again , adjusted clutch, still the same.
I eventually tried second gear and all good as was third etc.
I reckon I know what it is...... who wants to try and diagnose it before I pull the motor down( I think this is my first step).
Any ideas????
:(:(:(:(:

Change the blood of the engine and have a gander. If it comes out all shiny like with metal flakes and chunks...I guess your right... time to pull her apart.

Mark,

So the problem is only in first gear? If so it sounds like a gear failure. How long ago was it down for the lower end ? Trans oil been coming out clean since?

Glenn,
I have rebuilt the bottom end when the ignition side bearing went about a year ago but I have never replaced any gears.
Is replacing gears necessary in a 4 year old bike, they did not seem worn to me when the bike was last apart.
?How often would you replace them, obviously it depends on type of riding and amount.
I have been doing a lot of endurox practice, jumping logs, tyres etc and also a lot of rut practice..... just wonder if all the 1st gear blips for the logs accelerated the problem?
The only other thing I can think of was when I got a dodgy gasket for the clutch cover and the bike lost oil in a race and got quite hot in the box.I know one gear was slightly different in colour to the others but I am pretty sure it was not first gear.
As I said it is only the first gear.
I will pull it down over the next few days and let you know for sure but I'm with you and reckon I have stripped first gear.
Hopefully not too much damage from bits in there. I'll take a few pics.
Cheers Mark

Mark,

Normally these are bulletproof and look great when torn down, even after many hrs. If you lost oil and things got hot enough to discolor all bets are off and I'm afraid you answered your own question. Drop the oil and prepare for the horror.

Give me a couple of hours and I will probably be drowning my sorrows.
Just about to start the cleansing now.......:(

Jeez Mark, not much joy for you about this, especially after we were talking sell/new bike etc.
Hopefully there's not to much damage.

Yeh , I know.
Oh well. I have the motor out and have just got to split the cases now. Would have it done already but had to go out for tea.
Will split cases tomorrow and gasp in horror.
I will still sell it if I can get 6k for it and get one of these 6 days.
Evidently , my mate in the bike shop has had two calls of which both now have my number.I have not spoken to either yet though.
Hopefully the gears are not too dear.
I will take a couple of shots if it is worth it.

By the way, you sold yours yet?
Cheers Mark

200 or 300?

Na still at Scotties, few people interested here and there but no joy as yet. He's had to many later models in there so peeps are going for them first dammit.
Hopefully soon, its been 6 months now.

I'm looking at getting a new 300.
What have you got on yours in Scotties?
Cheers Mark

Oh well , at least you will probably get six over there . I think I will be very lucky to get that in SA.
By the way here are some shots of the gearbox;

Those dogs look pretty bruised mate. I am only viewing them on my phone but might be time for a gear or two.

Oh well there you go.
Never run a motor low on oil. Pretty obvious unless you are out in the middle of nowhere trying to baby the bike to help.
This was over a year ago but the damage was done.
One selector is buggered, 5th and 6th gears stuffed and also first and the gear next to that.
All up four new gears needed and one selector plus all gaskets etc.....
:o
I think I will keep the bike for a while now.
Cheers Mark

Have a good feel and look at all the gearbox bearings too. I would just replace them to be sure anyway!
