Kick start with dead or no battery?

On a 2014 250, should you or shouldn?t you be able to still kickstart the bike with a dead or no battery?

Bike died this morning whilst in the woods, no lights, no speedo nothing. Tried to kick start it and wouldn?t go. Pulled plug to check for spark, no spark.

Got home tested battery, 2.0v and discharges rapidly as soon as the meter is put across it.

Fitted new battery and All is ok.

Now, I have always been under the parhaps wrong impression that you should always still be able to kick or bump start a bike with a dead or even no battery attached.

I don't know the real answer but I have always been able to kick my 2011 to life with a drained battery. I cannot say for certain that the battery was dead dead but it wouldn't spin the starter.

I would hope it is designed to kick start and run ok without battery power, but I'm not so sure that's true. Mine kick started and ran ok with a dead battery, but the battery still had 12.5 volts but not enough amperage to even light the multifunction switch green indicator. According to the wiring diagram the cdi needs 12 volt supply? Did yours start to run strange before it stopped? If it weren't so cold here I'd pull my battery and see if it still runs correct. I really want to know what to expect now. I removed the battery and e-start on my 12 (no changes to harness) the day I got it from the dealer. It runs fine. Apples and oranges though.

Based on the wiring diagrams:

Kickstart bike should be able to start with no battery (AC CDI).

Estart model will not kickstart without the battery (DC CDI).

But your results may be different since in reality the bikes may not match the diagrams.

Hi Neil, thanks.

My bike is an e start model with the estart removed. However, the CDI wasn?t changed on removal, just the motor and ring gear removed and the plastic cover fitted.

Ok,I wanted to know for sure. I pulled the battery from my 15 e-start, it starts and runs as it should.

14-17 e-start has 7 wire cdi (which mine has)

14-17 kick has 9 wire cdi (extra red and blue wires for ac voltage from stator to cdi)

On the e-start cdi it has 12v power feed from regulator/rectifier yellow and green wire. which will allow it to run with no battery.

You have a problem with the regulator/rectifier or harness.
