number one i posted in the sticky but didnt get any response...
my new(98) 250 has a 2k2 in it now it exits the case on the front side with a plastic cover, but it came with another magnesium cover that has another coil in it, which also exits in the front, but from the cover itself, not the case, and it wil actually bolt on over what already there, although its too far away to do anything..
what is this?

I should wait till the smart guys around here give you the "right" answer.
But, I'll give it a stab and hope not to look like a chump.
The frist picture looks like the newer 2K2 ignition on the
2000 and up bikes. The lower picture looks like the older
Ducati type ignition from the 96-99 EC models.
If the bike in the first picture is supposed to be a 1998.
It looks to me like it does not have the counter balancer
installed like it should.
Ok, I'll sit back and see if my WAG was even close.

Thanks Mr. Bear. I guess I kind of cheated on the test........

I have the same set up on my 98 as the bottom picture of the OP.
The outer portion is the high output lighting coil.
I can't remember taking off the left side stator cover to see how everything
is hooked up and mounted on that 98.
I did the 2K2 to 2K3 with the floating gound mod on my 02.
But since Smackover racing installed the large Ducati unit on my 98.
I have not looked inside to see how it works.....I smell "weekend project"
As I plan to add a battery and a Rectifier/Regulator to the 98. I'll need
to learn the "doos-n-don't" with that system too.
Im think'n there is more to it for the original poster than just adding the
MAG side cover and get instant power.
Where IS Mr. Jim Cook when you need him? He'll have the answers for you.
And I'll bet Mr. Marolda would know the insides of this unit just as well.

Back to the ignition. Thats the old Ducati energia system. There should be a an additional rotor magnet, like a spin on flywheel weight, that goes on the small 2K-2 flywheel and engages the coils in the cover.

Widebear: Where in the world did you score those 01 blk rad shrouds?

"Luck and a lot of watching the internet for GasGas items for sale."
I have a spare NOS set sitting in a box. These were new several years
ago, I think I got them from Jim Cook and added the graphics from
GoFasters.
As for the plate. The bike was built by Steve @ MotoWest. Bought by
a friend who took it to Colorado and got a plate for it there. I bought
it from friend in 2002 or so and took the Co. plate and the bike to Ca. DMV.
It flew right past the Vehicle inspection and they issued a plate no
questions asked.
BTW, the bike is a hoot to ride in the local mountain canyons. Here is a
picture from near the famous "Rock Store" in Malibu.

that is correct, but it came in the box that had the other coil in it, it has almost no wear on it. if i ever get a wild hare, ill put it back in just to see how smooth it really is!

does anyone know where to get the extra bit to run this coil?
gofasters doesnt have anything this old that i can see!

could i just weld on an extension with magnets to the fw thats on it already and use that coil completely seperate from the ignition?
a pic of the magnets would help a lot too, its got 14 coils, grouped into 4 sets, 2 long sets, 2 short sets....

The difference is significant to say the least. Before you try
to install the balancer. Make sure you have all the parts. Mine
was missing the drive gear on the right side of the crank as
well as the balancer mechanism. And make SURE you align the
timing marks on the (drive and driven) gears off the right side
crank end. You will not be happy if you don't.
Cheers, Jeff So. Cal.

Don't attempt to weld anything to the flywheel, you will destroy it. You need the correct part. Post on the classifieds. Also, call GoFasters don't just go by the website. Call some dealers as well, you never know what they may have laying around. As far as a photo, there used to be some on the old Smackover site. I'm pretty sure my friend Cruiser's '97 has this ignition. Perhaps if you ask him nicely, he may take a picture when he has time.
