Can this rod assembly be removed and left off? I have the left hand rear brake and left the brake lever on and it finally snapped off, so I'm going to delete the lever since I dont use it any longer.

I would think it would push its self out with the back pressure. I think I would adjust it all the way in and use some safety wire to keep it in.

Yes and no. Under the black rubber cap is a looking ring which holds the rod and the piston with a big washer. When removing the ring, the rob and the piston will be pushed out. When using a hand brake for the rear I would remove the whole master cylinder.
