Ring end gap

Doing my first top end on my 300. After 240 hours (that snuck up on me) power was a bit soft.
For what it's worth the piston still looked really good and probably within spec. There was indication of lots of blow by though. My power valve was way over due for a good cleaning though, I believe it would stick occasionally as the bike would be unexplainably loud at times, now I see why.
I think next time I may tear it down at 125-150 hours clean the power valve and replace the rings.
Now for the question. I found through a search in this forum a ring end gap of .4.-.8mm for the ring end gap. My old ones measured .458mm. The new rings are closer to .3mm (Wossner) Can anyone verify my numbers before I start filing?
