shiftin issues...

So I pulled the 97 gasser out of mothballs and got her running today.. Feels small after running a 625.. I think I have to pull the sidecover to inspect things. Shifts slightly knotchy and the shifter does not return from first. You have to reach down low to bring her to second. Going up seems normal. I'm going to pull the cover and check if somethings sticking.. and change the oil,, it has little use on it but at least 5 years of sitting..
Any ideas.. I'm all ears..

Throw some ATF in the gearbox, and run that. ATF is designed to minimize/clean up gumming (tiny little hydraulic valves control the shifting in an automatic transmission). Running ATF for a ride or two will allow the solvents in the fluid to work on any gummy interfaces, and it should smooth transmission operation.

It's cheap, and it works.

Steve,

You would be stiff too after sitting 5 years.

You rode it after you had it apart last right? Sticky "scorpion". Good idea fom blitz before you pull the cover.

Last ran the sandy lane enduro,, then ran it once as a loaner for 28-30 mile play ride on the broad mtn,, then sitting.. I did have the clutch basket out a while back comparing it to the 03 trying to figure out why the 03 had a stiffer pull.. I'll pull the clutch apart to be sure its back together right..
