Hey guys, I recently bought a brand new left-over 2013 XC250R. One cool thing, the seller managed to get it tagged and titled.
My friends and I frequently ride areas that put us on public roads where a tag is required. These are mostly dirt roads but sometimes we have to connect trails via short runs on pavement. My ridding buddies all have street legal bikes and my last bike, a KTM 500 EXC, was street legal right out of the box. But my new Gas Gas is obviously not exactly. So I want to do what I can to sorta fly below the radar, which means mount the tag, add a mirror and a horn and maybe turn signals.
First order of business is the tag... I have a piece of aluminum sheet metal I think I can make a decent tag bracket out of, but before I do that, I want to ask if there's a better way to do it? Is there an OEM solution that'll bolt right on? Anything available from the aftermarket? If anybody's got ideas, I'm all ears. And if you've actually mounted a tag on your bike, I'd love to know how you did it.
The mirror should be pretty easy... I've already seen some pretty good solutions, but again, I'd like your input if you be so kind as to share it with me.
Now for the horn... BTW, I've done a little searching here and elsewhere... the horn looks a bit more complicated because the bike has no battery. Any ideas on that?
And finally the turn signals... Well, let me step back just a bit please. I have a riding buddy who is a traffic cop; he says, the tag, mirror and horn are mandatory, but you'd probably get a pass on the turn signals as long you're using hand signals and not riding at night... "probably" being the operative word there. So, I may just pass on the signals for now and maybe revisit that part of it later.
BTW, I've noticed there are several open plugs behind the headlight and also there's at least one open plug inside the rear fender, which makes me wonder if in other countries the bike was sold in street trim. If OEM parts are available, I'd be very interested in getting 'em.
So that's it. I would really appreciate any advice you'd care to share with me. Also, it might be fun to hear any experiences you've had when riding your Quasi-legal dirt bike on public roads. If you've been stopped, how'd things go?
