Street "legal" parts... need advice...

Hey guys, I recently bought a brand new left-over 2013 XC250R. One cool thing, the seller managed to get it tagged and titled.

My friends and I frequently ride areas that put us on public roads where a tag is required. These are mostly dirt roads but sometimes we have to connect trails via short runs on pavement. My ridding buddies all have street legal bikes and my last bike, a KTM 500 EXC, was street legal right out of the box. But my new Gas Gas is obviously not exactly. So I want to do what I can to sorta fly below the radar, which means mount the tag, add a mirror and a horn and maybe turn signals.

First order of business is the tag... I have a piece of aluminum sheet metal I think I can make a decent tag bracket out of, but before I do that, I want to ask if there's a better way to do it? Is there an OEM solution that'll bolt right on? Anything available from the aftermarket? If anybody's got ideas, I'm all ears. And if you've actually mounted a tag on your bike, I'd love to know how you did it.

The mirror should be pretty easy... I've already seen some pretty good solutions, but again, I'd like your input if you be so kind as to share it with me.

Now for the horn... BTW, I've done a little searching here and elsewhere... the horn looks a bit more complicated because the bike has no battery. Any ideas on that?

And finally the turn signals... Well, let me step back just a bit please. I have a riding buddy who is a traffic cop; he says, the tag, mirror and horn are mandatory, but you'd probably get a pass on the turn signals as long you're using hand signals and not riding at night... "probably" being the operative word there. So, I may just pass on the signals for now and maybe revisit that part of it later.

BTW, I've noticed there are several open plugs behind the headlight and also there's at least one open plug inside the rear fender, which makes me wonder if in other countries the bike was sold in street trim. If OEM parts are available, I'd be very interested in getting 'em.

So that's it. I would really appreciate any advice you'd care to share with me. Also, it might be fun to hear any experiences you've had when riding your Quasi-legal dirt bike on public roads. If you've been stopped, how'd things go?

Hi Willi, yes. oem has everything plug and play. Turn signal and horn leeds are behind the headlight. You will need a new mulitswitch (oem) which isn't cheap.

Tusk makes dual sport kits that are a breeze to install. The 2 stroke kits are pretty universal. U wouldn't even need to cut into your oem harness. I'm ganna put a KDX tusk kit on my gasser in the near future.

Interesting, I have a 2013 EC300E that I am looking to do the same with. I'm not looking for highway riding but would be nice to be able to take short rides on the lower speed roads where I live. Kind of like a very modern version of a Bultaco Alpina.

I was looking at the Tusk kit today. Looks pretty good and the whole kit is priced about the same as the Gas Gas signal switch. If I can find OEM at a decent price I'll go that route but the Tusk kit is looking pretty attractive. Will be interesting to see where this thread goes.

Tag bracket, the Sicass kit came with a piece of plastic. I like using rivots instead if bolts. The light has quit working though, it didn't last long. I'll probably change out out for a UFO, Acerbis, or PoliSport

A lot of guys up here buy a cheap flexible plastic cutting board from the dollar store and cut a mount out of it. Mount with one or two small bolts in the ctr of the plastic, then use the holes in the plate to attach your plate to the plastic mount. It stays flexible that way.

Fantastic idea.

They're a uk company, but do a lot of overseas business. They sell Leonelli parts, same as Gas Gas. European gassers do come with horn, winkers, brake lights etc. I assume the 2013 lighting loom is similar to the older models, which use a small half wave rectifier behind the headlight to give dc for the horn, and I think the flasher box for the indicators goes in the airbox.

I have seen head and tail light units with built in indicators in the past (so they don't get broken on the trail) but they would spoil the look of a 2013

Thank you sir!

Seems like OEM would be the cleanest was to go. Can you (or anybody) recommend a good source for the parts?

This is very helpful! I'll shoot 'em an email.

I have a Vespa scooter horn on the way. They have both 6 and 12 volt horns that run strictly on AC. I'll let you know how it sounds when I get it in the next few days.

Street legal parts

I made my 2007 EC 300 street legal with: GG parts - headlight, tail light, front and rear turn signals. Trailtech parts - DC rectifier, horn/headlight/turn signal switch. Misc parts - Acerbis mirrors, Cycle Gear license plate bolt/light combo, cheap horn from somewhere, big capacitor from some Internet electronics shop. I also have a small 12v battery and toggle switch that could replace the capacitor if I ever needed to pass inspection. I made my own license plate holder.
