Transmision problems

I have a frien that has a 99 gas gas 250 I dont believe it is an ec model. It has a 19" rear wheel and a five speed gear box. Put crank bearings in the bike and it runs very well. If you lean the bike to the right side and clutch it a little it locks up tight as a drum. You can wiggle the shifter around a little and get it to unlock. lean to the left and clutch it with no problem. Any help or ideals would be greatly appreciated.

I am guessing the pin which rides in the shift drum groove is loose/missing. Maybe the retainer came loose, or it broke.

If you engage 2 sets of gears (each of which wants to turn the shafts at a different rate), the only speed which matches is zero.

We used to call this "tie-up" back when I worked for GM's transmission division. If your clutch timing were wrong, you'd get the transmission to bind. Same phenomena here, presuming I am right.
