Updating a 2001

I have seen the post over on thumpertalk that shows a guy taking a 2001 up to a 2010 look. I really like that but was thinking I may not want to spend that much on this 2001. What year model bike could I update to without having to change the tank and sub-frame for?

Anything older than '07 would need the new subframe and related parts. '07 -'09 is just plastic.

An o6 other wise you will need a new subframe to update to the later plastics, but the 06 plastics will look the same as your 01's.

07 was the year that the look got updated and you cant go to those plastics without the newer style subframe.

Aha. I was think there may have been a change around 2003 or so that updated the number plates or something.

If I try to update to a 2011 look, I would need a sub frame, seat, tank and possibly a new silencer, correct?

Anything else like new airbox, pipe mounts, other tid bits?

Thanks.

this is not a great picture, was taken with my iphone.. this is my 01 with 04 shrouds , rear number plates and air box door...I had it running in the shop and smoked it up...

I was talking with a guy at Smiths Powersports in PA, he said the subframe, seat, airbox, and plastic kit will run you about $800 and then the graphics will run you about $200.

Then you need to have your frame and wheels powder coated.

He mentioned that he had a local guy that he uses to do that work and he charges about $60 for two rims (broken down already) and $100 for a frame. Figure about $50 for the swing arm too. So a Total of about $210 for the color change there.

So for a little over $1200.

I am not sure if his $800 price included the updated headlight and housing.

If your stock stuff is in great shape you could probably recoupe $200-$300 of that cost, putting you out $900 and having a brand new looking motorcycle.

Not too bad I would say.

In '02 the left side panel went to a 2-piece for air cleaner access. So for '02 to '06 you have to use that airbox also.
I wish I could afford to update mine, the "pink" red is getting old to look at. I keep scraping together newer plastic and then keep having to put it on the kids bike :D

If you are looking at putting new spokes in that will run you 120 a wheel for Buchanon stainless which is what you should go with. Are you going to reuse your spokes?

The spoke look really good if you hit them with some fine steelnwool then polish them out with some mothers polish. Not exactly new looking from way up close, but from about 1 to 2 feet, they look new.

I havent tried too hard to polish the nipples yet, they are much harder to do.

Well the nipples arent hard to do after all. I figured out a way to make it simple. You just take a spoke and invert it into a drill press so that the threads are down, thread the nipple onto the end, speed set on medium, just hold a piece of scotch brite pad arond the nipple for a few seconds, then repeat with very fine steel wool, then repeat with mother polish and then a clean rag. They come out real nice and shiny. Boom, just saved $70. Takes about a minute or two for each one.
