Vintage Maicos

A guy I know has a neighbor with two vintage Maicos for sale. A '77 MC250 and '78 MC400. I have no idea on condition other than the 250 runs. The owner has not set a price yet as he is not sure what they are worth. Any idea what these are worth, in various condition? Any interests let me know and I'll get more info.

Post it over on KTM Talk in the other Euro bike section. There are a couple of Maico guys in there on a fairly regular basis.

Les tells me that this is cladoo's second home (this is his first!) :)

If anyone comes across a 1974-ish kx125 - this was my first mx bike and I would like to purchase... (I think '74-'76 were nearly identical except for bold new graphics from year to year - black fenders in 75/76?)

Yes I have a few vintage mx'ers. A '74 KX125 would be hard to find as they were very rare even back then, rotary valve and very fast. I have a '74 Yamaha MX100, a '75 Suzuki TM 400, a '78 Kawasaki KX250A4, and an '81 Suzuki RM 125. These are all in various states of restoration. I am just in the process of insulating my garage and reorganizing it so I will have time this winter to work on them.

Boy Claude, we have a lot in common (as far as bikes go). Not only did I have a Yamaha Mini Enduro 60, but I had a 1981 RM125 too.

When I was racing mine in C, B MX class in 1974 and 1975, I would be the only person at the track with a kx125; Everyone else was on CR125 Elsinores mixed in with yz monoshocks...

The rotary valve gave the bike a good amount of torque for a 125 of the day. The carb was relatively small and mounted side draft on the right side of the motor. Someone made a kit that allowed you to relocate the carb behind the motor and step up to a bigger bore on the carb.

In stock form, the controllable motor and bottom end pull made it easy to corner and pulled well coming away from the corner.

The stock tires were junk and after I put a trelleborg on the front - it cornered very, very well too.

Skunk Works were the guys who made the intake so you could run a larger carb, 36 or 38 I think. I raced with two guys that had them and they did stick out among the Elsie's. They both had cyl problems from seizing and there weren't aftermarket guys to replate them like today. I liked the sound of them, they were different then the Honda's.

I just gave some of my Mini Enduro parts to a women that is restoring one. What I had left of anyway. I never did race an '81 RM125 but the one I have my neighbour gave me. I have a line on a '76 YZ125X that I want to get as that was one of my favorite bikes ever, but I have to get rid of some before I can as I have no room for any more. (So my wife says anyway. LOL)

Hi Claude,
Here is another mint mx125 for ya - sounds and looks like it was hidden in a barn for years. This guy is coming down on his price - he was previously asking $1400...

Back on topic with the maico - pre-74 is worth much more than the later years - these qualify for vintage class...

Jeff,

That Yamaha was my first MXer! Nice speciman. My bro had the '74 Suzuki TM125 and the Suzuki out performed the Yam in every way, as long as you didn't let it bog, then you were done. Piston port motor had absolutely no low end at all.

The guy is a neighbor of someone I know, I have never seen the bikes. I'll try and get some contact info for you next week.
