My upper exhuast mount bolt insert broke free from the frame. Guess the original tack weld did not cut it. I plan to have a welder tack it back into place. any technical tips on what they should be using as far as type of welder, rod/wire etc etc. for chromoly ... the frame is chromoly isn't?? How bout frame prep?? What should I spray the area with after, regular black metal paint?? Frame is powder coated isn't it?? 06 300 btw. it will be a mobile rig that shows so I want make sure the dude is carrying the right stuff.

Can't answer exactly but ...
I had my frame go around the footrest / sidestand mount. I cleaned away the Nickel coating and used a normal MIG setup for mild steel. Then I used some galvanising spray to stop it rusting. It worked.

Some of the GG welding around ancillaries is rubbish I'm afraid.

I am a hack welder, but what I found with the GG nickel plated frames is that you really have to remove the nickel to get any kind of heat localized in the frame. The nickel is an excellent conductor of heat (think jet airplane turbine blades, Iconnel), and if you don't get the bare cr-mo exposed, you'll have a tough time getting a good pool.

Don't ask me how I know.

TIG and 4130 wire, as Eric K states, is the way to go.

I'm glad I was ignorant or I wouldn't have tried! :o
It held well and didn't rust but if it's a new, i.e. valuable bike you had better do it right.

my frame is black powder coat, there is no nickel on said frame is there?? I'm assuming it is powder coat on top of chromoly

For that you may not need any filler rod, just clean the area very well and have the guy go around the insert with the TIG. Small torch is better.
