What's up with this flywheel nut?

'05 MC 250

I looked at Glenn's pics in the "which ignition" sticky and it looks like I have part of that flywheel weight, i.e. the nut. :rolleyes: Something apparently "spun" on the ignition so I'm thinking that the nut went loose and the weight spun? Is that curved "shoulder" on the nut supposed to be like that? I'm trying to imagine how this would interface with the flywheel weight.

The original stock flywheel nut (I think) came in a box of extra parts. Maybe I should use that? Should there be a washer under the nut?

Looks odd, almost like a spin on weight that was turned all the way down on a lathe. The stock nut should be a deformed thread locking flange type.
 
By spin on I assume you mean the nut is not separate from the weight.

Is that weight you show in the pics in the sticky a spin-on or is the nut separate? Does anyone know where I might find pics of these weights and nuts?

There are circular score marks on the flywheel that show that there was a weight on this machine that was slipping/spinning but I don't know what an intact flywheel weight looks like.
 
The weight in the pic is a 10 oz one piece spin-on. I'll try and shoot a more detailed pic for you this weekend. Should not come loose. A little loctite and a burst from a 3/8" pneumatic and your set.
 
So are there weights available that have separate nuts?... or is my original theory possibly correct that this nut was pressed into the assembly and somehow came loose from the weight.

I asked the previous owner about it and he said "it broke."

The FW weight pic on GoFasters is terrible. Can't see much. I'd appreciate some better pics. Is your weight like the one GoFasters shows or are there others available?

O.K. I googled my own question and I see that Steahly has GasGas weights up to 12oz. with a separate nut, but it doesn't look like there is any kind of set screw or key to keep the thing from spinning and since that appears to be what happen previously on this bike I'm a little leery of that system. It looks like there "might" be set screws on the unit that GoFasters sells. What I really liked the looks of were the "ring" type units that you had to drill, tap and bolt on. You could induce the same effect on inertial momentum with less overall weight. I know we're splittin' hairs here, but why not, it IS the internet. :D

The weights from GoFasters are made in one piece, by Checkpoint Machine I beleive. Same ones that Smackover sold and RT&T still sells. The large dia. portion does not bottom on the flywheel, there is a boss on the flywheel side that tightens against the surface just like the stock flange nut. It can not spin on the flywheel and remain attached. They work well with no problems, and you can change them is seconds if desired. I have a 10 and a 14. Stealthy design may be different using a separate nut. Its a common Kokusan 2K-2 flywheel so I'm sure its like their other applications. Biggest difference would be clearance to the cover.


Here is a pic. The mounted weight is the 14 oz. The one proped against it is the 10 oz.
