Really this is a processor question because the only real differance between the 2 that I'm researching to buy, one (Gateway) has AMD C-series processor, C-50 1.0ghz. It is dual core.
the other is a HP with AMD Phenom II, 2.6ghz quad-core.
The HP is $40 more. It sounds like it beats the Gateway hands-down but am I missing something? I don't belong to any computer forums and most of what I have read on them I don't really think many of the answers are from intelligent adults anyways. I'm not a gamer. This would be a general-use laptop for photo editing, internet, and downloading/playing music. Here's a link to each.

Thanks for any input!

i know its not on your options, but maybe look into an asus computer, as they will be much easier on your wallet. and as far as your two choices, the hp should be faster. generally, bigger numbers on things means faster stuff.

Jeff,

I just picked up a Gateway Laptop from Best Buy a couple of weeks ago using Christmas giftcards. It was $349, not the highest speed, and it works great for what I need: GG riders forum surfing, web surfing, and picture uploading. I don't have time or attention span to game so cheap and fast worked for me the best. I went to Best Buy and played with all of the laptops and found the Gateway and Asus to be the fastest. If you want to check, just kill the Best Buy application, pull up the pre-installed "card games" and compare how long it takes to get "FreeCell" up and running on each. Some of the HPs took a long time for this so I went with the cheapest Gateway. It works great and my 6 year old Gateway Laptop is still going strong (it was a freebie from Best Buy when they lost my laptop that was being cleaned). You really can't go wrong with anything new these days!

HP support has gone down the tubes over the last 5 years. Dell seems to have picked up the slack and actually has decent support, solid components. You can find the stuff sometimes cheaper at the BestBuy's, even less than online.

Go MAC and you will never go back. 12 years no problems except one which was fixed for free. That's on 2 laptops and 2 desktops throughout the 12 years.

i've had 1 hp, and that's enough. needed to be mailed in every few months for warrentee work, and usually got sent back with something else broken, if the original problem was repaired in the first place.

(sorry about the bad grammer, it's late and i'm getting loopy)

The Mac's will have less issues, but are double the cost.

As far as the rest, the parts are all made in the same place. Pick your poison.

I've had good luck with many at work. Keep the pc on a UPS to help with power issues and use a protector on the ethernet cable (for storms) and you should be fine.

Faster IS better. Quard core is pretty well the norm these days.

If you're not into building your own then you should look at maybe a local company that will offer you great support if something does go wrong or you just need help...even with software. You might pay a little more but the headaches it will save you might be worth it.

Up here in the Great White North I deal with a wholesale store called NCIX . Where you can pick and choose what you want.

NCIX is also in USA.
