04 EC200 power-where is it

ASR-4

New member
This is my first GG
I've been riding for many, many years with tons of different bikes
bought this bike used
have a 04 EC200, its got a needle that is tappered with the numbers milled off, one size lower pilot and main, jet, #5 slide, clip #3, FMF pipe, silencer, has a new piston rings.
while the power is somewhat snappy and pulls really good on top, and on fast trails works pretty good, problem is when you get on more technical trails where your on and off throttle, the power is very flat from low to mid, not good.
ive ridden KDX's with alot more.
the plug has a good brown color.

what should the squish be? I'd like to check it next

I'm scratching my head on this one not sure where the power whent

thank you for any advise

maybe move the clip one way or another on the needle and try it. it may just be that section of needle isnt agreeing with your motor.

LTR high volume PV cover. Maybe try a little more fuel in the low to mid area, they run flat if a bit lean. Another 200 trick is to extend the header of the pipe 10mm. Some guys have had great results with a 36mm carb. CDI from an older XC200 also may help. What ignition? Stock timing?

Squish should be 1mm, but it won't be with a stock head.

Member Stainlesscycle here is a 200 guy with more specific experience, I'm sure he will chime in and help.

lotsa questions:

what size main and pilot? if it's a single taper needle it's probably a ddk or cck.
which ignition? and where is timing set? flywheel weight?
what's your squish? compression reading?
stock pv cover or bigger ltr/checkpoint one?

he said numbers milled off on the needle. wasnt that les that used to do that? on his ddk or cck? im not sure, but i have definately read something like that somewhere.

Sounds like mine before I fitted a new piston and rings.
I'd give it a good check over there are lots of things that could be contributing as well as the setup. Being a 200 it's quite noticeable when they're a bit off.

I think I may have found it,
the power valve was stuck 3/4 open
going to re do the PV govener tonight

I'm thinking when the last person redid the top end they assmbled it wrong

now I've got to order some gaskets

will let you know

order at least one of the thinnest base gaskets. that way if your squish is way off, you may be able to get it to a reasonable state of tune with just 1 base gasket...

That happens when the rod is pulled, moving the governer and allowing one or more balls to dislodge. That would certainly explain your problem!

I also heard that les milled the i.d. of the needle in his jet kits .. actually thats the way mine came ... I'd guess you've got an ltr needle in there. I can tell hte difference between the cck I have now and the ltr needle. so I know on a 300 he did not use a cck for the 300 anyway. not sure what he used for the 200.

Well -I would like to say thanks for all the advice
diffiantly it was the PV governor, prior owner had installed a new psiton and when they tighten the nut that holds the PV arm they opened up the PV Governer and it let the ball bearings that work the governor fall out of place, IE it let the PV stick open

Finally got a chance to ride the bike today
temps where a little cool about 38-41 degrees
Bike ran great, plenty of power, my jetting was a touch lean this morning but after it warmed up a couple degrees it was close to spot on.
I'll post the settings when i find my notes.

I currently have a KTM 200 as well and would have to say this bike should hang right with it.
the KTM has a little more off the bottom and into the mid ,but this GG has a smoother but still quick transition from bottom to top,

Now I'm going to tear into the suspension as it was a little soft in front and not as smooth in back (but not harsh)

lots of fun:)
