12/50

anyone running this gearing??
I had these sprockets on hand and a chain to fit it so I put it on to check it out. I have to say for the tight technical stuff I ride I really like it. I had an A rider friend take my bike for a spin to warm it up while I got into my gear. he said it felt much faster than he remembered it. Don't know if it was the gearing but its the only thing I played with in quite some time. I've run 12/48 and 13/52 which are both 4 to 1. I've run 12/52 which is 4.33 to 1 and did not like it, too much shifting ... the 12/50 is 4.16 to 1 and seems to work really well. I'll run this set up for the rest of the season.

I've tried a number of different gearing combinations on all three Gassers I've owned. Although I've done a fair number of enduros, a couple hare scrambles and a few turkey runs/dual-sports, the majority of my riding is technical single track. Never felt the need to drop one tooth on the c-shaft sprocket, especially on the 300.

13/47 - Stock gearing on my '98 EC250. Good for dual-sport and high-speed riding. Top speed of 82 mph. Required a lot of clutch slip for 2nd gear starts. Technical hill climbs required first gear and lots of clutch slipping to make it up.

13/50 - Swapped my '98 EC250 over to this combo. Top speed of 75 mph. No problems with 2nd gear starts and easily plonked around in 1st. Good overall combination for technical single track and enduros.

13/52 - Tried this combo on my '98 EC250. Top speed of 64 mph*. Dead-engine 2nd gear starts required zero clutch slipping. Not a good combination for technical single track as it was impossible to plonk along in first and second was just a little too tall.

*Top speed was clocked with a reed block spacer, similar to those on the 300, installed which limits top-end power.

13/49 - This combo was installed on my '01 XC300 when I bought it. Pretty much identical results to the 13/50 combo on my 250. Top speed of 72 mph. Have yet to encounter a hill I can't make it up. This is probably the best overall combo for the 300.

13/48 - This combo was installed on my '03 EC300 when I bought it. Top speed of 75 mph. Technical hill climbs do require a bit more clutch work. Technical single track is pretty much a 1st gear affair. Swapped this combo over to my XC300 with similar results. The EC300 now sports a 13/49 combo.

I'm running 12/48 but that is a 200. The 12 keeps the motor in the better half of the power. I'm going to try 12/50 next time.
