2001 EC250 head bolt washers!!

Can someone confirm if there should be copper washers under the 6 bolts that fix the head to the cylinder???

When I stripped my engine, there was none fitted and no leaks through the bolts!

I check the Parts list and there's none listed, so I popped in my local bike dealers who looked on a parts drawing and they also said that there was none to be fitted.

But I've seen people saying that washers need to be fitted, so I'm a bit confused?????

Some years came with the copper washers some did not. I think some heads are slightly different than others and if the bike came with copper gasket I would reuse them. I use Teflon pipe sealant on the threads and a little under the bolt head and have not had a problem.

Ok thanks

If I get any problems I will add some, but for now I will use the bolts without washes like it was before I stripped engine!

Cheers for info

My '01 XC 200 didn't have the washers either. I think it was the later models that used the washers when they stopped using the allen head bolts.

I did use a little bit of thread sealant on the head bolts.

Quite correct. Early models came with them, then in '99-2000 they quit using washers. I'm not sure what the newest models are doing. The first bolts they used after the change were flange bolts, but the flanges were smaller than on the bolts I could order from McMasterrCarr or get from a fastener shop. The reason I looked for a better price was that Gas Gas charged me $10.50 each for them. I was happy when they changed the top of the head to accept a more generic bolt.
As Zman said, put back whatever it came with, (unless what it came with looks really wrong).

I use antiseize on my head bolts.

Anti-seize will do a good job of keeping the threads happy but the Teflon paste on the heads will help seal the coolant inside.
