2012 spring rates between 200/250/300

Clay,

Next time there over here, load 'em up with that good southern BBQ and beer for a week and when they get home the message will be clear.:D

I think you will be fine. I'm 176 lbs and they seem good to me at my B level speed so far. I thought I'd have to swap immediately because on my '07 I run 5.4/.44, but the '12 seems a bit different. Probably the linkage and 48mm PFP fork, which rides a lot higher in the stroke than the stiffer sprung 45s.

Thanks Clay. Are those rates OK for 170lbs in street clothes...or still too light??

You may be. You could try it to see before you spent the money. I like my suspension over sprung a little bit. I think you get more benefit from the lighter part of the stroke/valving. Glenn (GMP) is about that weight so he's a good source I would trust. My right leg weighs 170 so I wouldn't know personally!

Like I said ride it first, and give it time to break in. Don't judge it by your old GG alone, I have one of each trust me. The bike does not feel soft to me and the sag/preload numbers seem to work out so I'm running with it. Maybe I'll see it different after a fast whooped out sand course but so far so good. Both Steve(twowheels) here and Les at LTR agree.

The '12 is very good, its a serious race bike not a plush trail cruiser and such you feel the trail but it does not do anything bad. I ride in some real s^%t for fun so its got to be even better anywhere else!

Clay, Im roughly 130lbs maybe 140lb will all my gear on, are the stock springs in the '12 XC200 going to be to stiff for me?

Wow! That's the first time I have been asked that question. You may be the only sub-140 pounder on this forum!
You're gonna find that the Marzocchi forks are going to feel really stiff due to tight fork seals for the first few hours. I ususally tell guys to add 1 turn on the PFP valve and back the compression clickers out all of the way on the forks for the first 10 hours. At your weight you may want to leave the PFP valve out all of the way too. As the forks break in you can begin adding compression back in.
I really don't know what to tell you. I haven't had anyone at your weight give me any info on how the springs feel. Glenn is 170 and he feels the stock springs are good for him. I would certainly try them before I bought new ones if I were you.
Let us know what you find out.

My kid is 5'8" and 135 lbs. I'll put him on mine when I get a chance and see what the sag/preload looks like. I tend to think it may be a hair stiff unless your fast and like it that way, but everyone is different. I know a quick A rider that likes his stuff like mush, I hate that. In addition to Clay's points on the fork, pop the wipers and add some seal grease underneath, it helps a lot.

I did a demo with a couple A/B riders last night. The A rider weighed in at 180 (versus my B speed 200#) and felt that the forks with 0.45s were on the verge of being too stiff, even though he usually runs 0.46s on his Japanese bikes.

We backed the PFP out ~1/3 turn (so only ~2/3 turns remaining) and reduced compression by 5 clicks and he was in heaven.

Wow, thats amazing the PFP makes that huge a difference. Yea, Ill get it broke in and see how the sag and everything is riding and Ill report back.
