I had an issue where my front light and rear light would not come on while running. So I decided it was time to go thru the electrical system, clean the connectors ( I used a CRC spray for electric connectors) and then I used dialectric grease on all connections. I put a brand new firepower battery out of the box in the bike (battery is good). Now when I push the starter button I get nothing at all, no click, no nothing. I kicked started the bike and it fired on first kick. Any ideas? I feel like I need a new wiring harness and all relays etc.........
I must say that I have never serviced a Gasgas with electric starter, but I do have som experience in the field of MC electrics...
I presume there is a starter relay somewhere.
As it starts on the kickstarter, the ignition and its wiring is OK.
It's the starter and its circuit that is to blame.
That circuit has 4 separate parts:
- the battery
- the pushbutton
- the starter relay
- the starter itself.
And of course all the wiring between them.
Check that there is battery voltage (12V) on the big terminal on the starter relay. If not, check the + cable from the battery to the starter relay and the ground (-) connection of the battery.
Check that the starter relay control terminal gets 12V when you hit the button. If it does, I guess the relay is to blame if you don't hear a click. If it doesn't get 12V, the pushbutton and the wiring from the battery via the button to the relay is the culprit. If so, you could try to feed 12V directly from the battery to the relay control terminal. If it clicks (and the starter turns the engine) the relay (and starter) is OK.
It could of course be thye button (switch) itself that is the problem. If you have the big multi-switch that is quite expensive, I think. On my bike, I have removed that one and replaced it with separate switches for light, gripe heating and stop. I have no start button.
