Anyone have a tool for compressing rear spring...

so I can adjust it without pulling it off? should be something to compress the darn thing and take the load off of the collar?
 
You don't have to do that. Clean the shock and spring well, and lube the body threads and spring/collar with silicone spray or WD40. With the bike on a stand, you should be able to twist the spring by hand and increase preload to the max you should be using anyway. Loosening is even easier. For dirty or stubborn shocks, or trail side, I made a prybar with a tubing cover to turn the adjuster by leveraging on the frame without slipping or scratching it.

Thanks Glenn, I will try the spring spin tomorrow... just getting everything cleaned from a muddy, muddy ride, then got home and dropped an exhaust valve on my old TroyBilt pressure washer. I picked up the little homelite from Home Depot with the honda motor... first pull out of the box it fired up. Now I need to figure out where to bury a body, err, pressure washer.
 
Also, if your changing springs on a '12/'13 for your weight, I have found that there is a difference from the '11 and prior. The '12 needs less spring IMO, for a proper ride. 5.4 is perfect on my '12, and a little sloppy on my '07. JMO, but the sag numbers and preload back it up.
 
I couldn't do the spring spin by hand, but I had a pair of vice grips that have the jaws rounded for pipe, so I could get it sung and then pull the grips around and it would bind up like a filter wrench and I could loosen it that way.
Thanks, not sure that I would have put much thought into doing it that way.

If its dirty, or especially sandy on the surfaces, it's tough. A clean shock/spring is quite easy.

Damn the sand here in houston, it is like extra fine sugar, gets every freaking where and it will not just rinse off.
