i have just decided to cut open the black expansion chamber that comes with the euro bikes. this has a catalytic converter in to meet emissions regs.
the pipe is otherwise identical to the standard exhaust.

i thought i would post a pic to help anyone else who wants to do this.

Bahh, why didn't I see this before, we missed in first cut.

But yes new pipe for close to free. I then chromed it so could clean it (much) easier. Needs a bit of prep at the chromers as they are a bit 'pitty' under the paint, but was shiny in exposed section so looks & cleans nice.

With the cat pipe swapped on, it ran so lame I'd never have bought the bike - & the pipe hadn't been run - so it wasn't blocked.

With the cat out I can't tell the diff between the std pipe. I chromed it so its easier to clean.

I did it on my '07 and the pipe is the same as stock with the cat removed. It is still on my '07. Runs fine! It is nice to have a spare pipe around. The '07 cat was in a different location than my '10 is.

What method did you use to cut the actual cat out mate?

Gave it to the Weldy guy. He used the cut torch to cut it out I think. He's a exhaust manufacturer and EC300 owner.

What bikes have this CAT fitted? What years?

It must be awful once it gets blocked up with carbon.

I hope my 2004 EC300 hasn't got one!

All the best, Dave.

You'll know if it has one. The pipe is HEAVY! and the power is weak. The pipe also has a small breather pipe section welded into it, and the whole thing is mat black.

They typically come in the crate (not fitted) along with a few other parts for euro emissions requirements. Crap shoot to know which years had them shipped with bike. I don't think my 2010 did, nor did my 2013 which I received in the crate. I've seen 2017 models get unpacked with them in there though (and have one sitting in my shed as we speak). Maybe the 'racing models' didn't get them?

So, golly many years on. My decatted pipe had some wear at manifold area so I put on my old bashed up original pipe.

Sounds different. And Bwwaaap it runs better. Decatted pipe is so much better than cated. But removing it isn't as good as the original on the 07 at least.

Jeez my bike rocks now.

Stand up wheelies on command

I wonder if it was necessary to make two cuts, it seems that the one on bigger diameter is sufficent to pull the cat out.

I just cut one open this week. Just cut along the fat section weld line and the cat will almost fall out. Reweld and enjoy!
