cdi boxes

Anyone know if all gasgas cdi boxes are the same part. I have not been able to find part numbers to tell if different bikes have different cdi boxes. I have a 2000 300 xc and a 2001 200 ec(?) and want to use cdi box off one for spare to other. will this work? Thanks.

They're not the same part. But if you put that 200 box on the 300, you should have one hell of a snappy ride.

What does the CDI box actually do in terms of the bike running?

and in theory, if someone were to put a 300 CDI box in a 200, would that give a smoother feel to the bike? in theory of course

it has the mapping of the ignition,, different maps give a different "feel" to the bike, or changes the way the bike builds power. the 05 and newer bikes have a cdi with 2 different maps that can be switced via a bar mounted switch. Rainy mode-smoother and sunny mode-crisper..
The calmest cdi I believe is the 03 ec 250 as that caused the most issues,, I swapped over to one from an 01 300xc and it really woke up the bottom end.

When you switched the CDI box did you loose top end power?

No,, just gained bottom and lost the mid hit. Was more linear with more pull from the bottom up.. top speed on the road was about 87 if thats an answer for top end.. and I could pull a wheelie at 65 and carry it to just over 75. So,, lost no top.. The 03-250ec cdi was just a soft mapping wasnt really good to me at all.. I think the mc 250 used a 200 cdi for a harder hit?

The way I heard it, from Jim Cook, back in the day of Don Knight (through '02), the XCs used the next smaller displacement EC CDI. So, a 300XC used a CDI from a 250EC for more low end snap, 250 a 200 CDI. Not sure about the 200XC. Steve and I both had 250 ECs, and they were pretty soft off the bottom, nothing like my '00 XC250. I swapped in a CDI from a '00 XC250 and the bike really came alive down low. I suspect the 200 CDI will make the 300XC an animal and 300 CDI make the 200 softer. You can't hurt anything by trying it.

BTW, sometime in '01/'02 they started color coding the shrink wrap on the CDI harness to designate the application, previously they were all black. Now, the extent of the individual specific CDIs mapping changes year to year is anyone's guess.
