If the Cannondale I had was a little shorter and turned a bit better, it would have been pretty decent in most of the stuff I ride. Even as it was, it was easier to ride than a TE450. Steve, your KTM feels a lot smaller than a TE, but the TE450s are very stable at higher speeds. 450s have their place, but anywhere that the weight comes into play, or the heat, is not for me. Your average dual sport or wherever you are not on/off the throttle a lot is fine. This is JMO for us average guys, not someone like Cervantes.
When you think about where these all came from, if it wasn't for the EPA here, and the prospect of lucrative parts sales, they likely would not exist at the level they do today and over ten years of hard R&D would have went into the two stroke. Its also possible that the direction was made easier by the sharing of road race and road technology, that was the case with Yamaha for sure. Thats where the big $$ is, and where the type of engine is dictated, so it makes sense all the big players would start there.
I've been to a lot of hare scrambles this fall, and its like the mid '90s again, the two stroke is coming back for sure.
