more clutch woes

i need to take the clutch off my bike to access the bent gearlever shaft and replace it,currently the bike is stuck in gear (1st I think).

I have got so far as removing the clutch cover, removed the springs bent the locktab back etc...I'm taking it that the lock nut is removed anti-clockwise??

but dont know how to hold the clutch basket from spinning so I can undo the nut....I thought about holding it with a screwdriver, but then thought better of it as it may damage the fingers

any help would be greatly appreciated

Can you use a Impact wrench? If not maybe put into gear and get someone to apply the rear brake on hard while u undo the nut

still having trouble removing the nut, tried the hammer trick didn't work

tried the back brake thing still no joy
I have no impact wrench
my 30mm socket doesn't seem to sit on the nut very well, had someone holding the cluch with a big pipe wrench whilst trying to undo the nut anti clockwise ...still no joy other than borrow a car with a tow hook and take it to a local garage with air tool

im stumped

I used the wood and swing arm but I went through the rear sprocket. Seemed sturdier than spokes.
Scribe a mark on the nut before you loosen it so you can get the torque close on re-install. I couldn't get the torque wrench to stay on the thin nut as the force ramped up, so I tightened it down to my mark with the impact wrench.

Yet another method is to put a coin (or a washer I suppose?) between 2 gears (one being the back of the clutch basket) to prevent them from rotating.

got a couple for you if you can weld a metal bar of some type to a old front sprocket, I have used a pipe wrench on the final drive. it does not mark it at all. but be carful as it can slip easily and may course damage. the final drive is made from some tuff old metal

I used a battery rattle-gun and the copper coin technique, worked a treat. Most battery drills have torque settings on them which has a similar effect if you can rig-up a drive to the socket. If all else fails...sharp chisel into the corner of the nut with a penny in the gear teeth! Good luck
