Cracked head 2014 300

S3 always in stock

Sorry to barge into the discussion, but FYI...we always keep S3 heads readily available for dealers to order, along with lots of other S3 product.

Please try and support your dealers here in North America as they need your business now more than ever. If your dealer needs help in getting S3 product information, have them contact me.

I can't help to think your broken kick start shafts and the cracked head are related in some way? I would be checking everything with a fine tooth comb.

This may be a classic case of coolant intrusion into the combustion chamber.
You can't compress a liquid, so the weak link would be the head.

Hey guys & gals, Hall's Cycles can definitely get your Gas Gas and S3 parts and most of the time cheaper and faster than importing. The S3 heads are in stock at the U.S. warehouse btw. If you have any questions or in need of parts or advise, give the shop a call. The guys would be happy to assist in any way they can.

I have heard really good things about these guys, they are supposed to be first rate people.

I don't have a band saw, but I cut the head vertically to look inside. There's a few spots in the coolant jacket that look porous or scabby, some near the two cracks... some not. Pretty hard for me to make any judgment. I know very little about casting, but some of this looks rough.
It seems strange to me that both the combustion chamber, and outer surface both have cracks.

I agree fully, and thanks for saying so.
Unfortunately I'm losing so much ride time lately that I panic and go for the quickest delivery optional possible. I suggest that you have S3 list you as a vendor, as that is how I was directed to RYP. He is the only vendor in the USA on S3's website.

I work at a foundry. I can see an area of shrink in the second photo. This is an area where casting flaws are most likely to develop, where two wall thicknesses meet and the metal cools last. Metal shrink caused by excessive metal pouring temperatures and/or areas where thick and thin areas meet will result in porosity. This also seems to be where your cracks developed.

The S3 head arrived on friday, I assembled my engine and have put in 2 solid days of riding since. Everything seems good!
I installed a fresh wossner piston kit, and cometic gaskets.
-Squish was reasonable using a thin base gasket, and the "A" insert
-Leakdown test was perfect, no measurable loss from 8psi for 10 minutes
-Ring end gap was a little tight for my taste, adjusted that

Just because there was suspicion, I checked anything that could affect the ign timing. Flywheel key is good, and stator / pickup are tight and in place.
I cant think of anything else to check that may have been a cause for this, so unless something happens again I'll have to assume the head was flawed.

Which insert is the "A" insert? Red?

I run the black insert and my squish is still around 1.5 mm

I am getting close to having to do a top end. Just out of curiosity where do you like to see your ring gap set?
