E-start Help

For those with the 2011 style e-start, I have a couple of questions.

Ok, on my 2011 that I'm adding e-start to I see that the CDI cannot mount were it did before. I'm assuming from looking at parts manuals and such that where the arrow is pointed to in the pic below is where it would be mounted with e-start, yes? I also assume I need bracket EE551002508 for this? Any pics of CDI mounting, wire routing, and such?

Slotted bar mounts the rectifier.

CDI mounts on the right side of the subframe. The plastic mounting bracket has two tabs at the top and one angled tab at the bottom. Top tabs have screws into the subframe. Bottom tab has a screw into the back/bottom of the air box.

Elastic strap goes around the CDI to hold it into the plastic mounting bracket. CDI wiring connector points to the front of the motorcycle.

You da'man! That was exactly the info and pics I needed to get it sorted. Thank you!

Revisiting this again.

After sorting through the harness I got with all the parts I bought I notice the regulator/rectifier will not mount back on the subframe like in the pics above. It will have to be mounted next to the ignition coil where the old AC only regulator mounted unless I would to add a bunch of wire and do some splicing. As you can see from my pic, the wiring doe not appear to be hacked up and it has the ground that bolts to the regulator. This all came from a 2013 bike so I'm kind of at a loss here.

Should I extend the regulator back to where it is supposed to be or will it be fine by the coil?

You know, after looking at this mess I just can't let it be. I can tell someone had been in to it but not in those pics. I have the 2011, 2012, and 2013 e-start wiring schematics and I'm just going to go through and fix this harness the way it should be. Proper connectors, soldering, heat shrink, and new loom material.

Damn, why do I have to be so picky about this stuff and especially wiring. :(

Good crimps are the way to go. Soldering will create a fantastic join, but leaves the wire vulnerable to fracture. Dirtbike vibration is not a nice environment.

Good point. I'll be using all the factory connectors and just extending what needs it. Those connections will be soldered and heat shrinked. However, there is some cheap auto parts store connectors that I will replace with some new high quality OEM types I have.

A couple of questions...

First, where does the factory ground the battery to, subframe, engine, or ???

Second, I believe I know where the starter relay mounts (just below and in front of the CDI) but what holds it there? A rubber piece? Whatever the part, does someone have a part # for it so I can track one down? EDIT: Just looked on Amazon and realized the same relay is used on lots of bikes and it uses a rubber sleeve with two slots in it to mount it. Anyone have a spare one of these sleeves so I don't have to order a cheap China relay just to get the rubber mount from it?

Pics would be awesome if you have them!

Ugh. Been fabricating a hybrid of my OEM non-e-start harness with the necessary bits from the butchered 2013 harness. Been following the diagram for the 2013 XC version and have been having to decode things as the wire color is different in some spots even though it goes to the same place. Anyway, front half of the bike is all sorted now. Just gotta add in the reg/rec and the starter relay wiring and it should be good to go and won't look like a freakin rat's nest any longer. Everything will be correct to the XC diagram for any future work or owner(s).

Fun, fun, fun.

Well, I think I have it all sorted now. Thankfully the 2013 manual has a really good wiring schematic. Waiting on my new Antigravity 801 battery to show up so I can test everything.

Still wondering if anyone can answer where the battery is grounded to? I haven't seen any mention where it goes or pics.

Yeah, I was hoping someone could answer where it grounds. I think I'm going to end up grounding it to the starter itself along with a separate ground to the subframe. Just wanted to know what the factory did or what others have found as the best. Oh well.

On my 2018 the battery grounds to the subframe. On one of the horizontal spars, behind the battery.

Some people have recommended running a heavier gauge wire to one of the starter mounting points. Again this is for the 2018 and newer bikes, but should apply to your application on the 2011.
