EC300 -2011 ignition timing

Ciao all!

Has anyone been playing with ignition timing? Just bought an EC300 race used as a rental bike in six days in Finland and compared to my older KTM the timing seems a bit conservative..

Nope, switch is changing the map, but what I'm looking for is what playing with basic timing will do..

If you have the 2K-3 which you probably do, there is a small locator insert in the upper slot of the stator to fix the timing. This can be removed and/or the bolt hole elongated 1mm or so for more advance. I have done this myself on an '03 250. Be carefull, especially with the more aggressive curve.

I'd look at the squish and jetting first, JMO.

I'll probably look at squish first as timing and squish are very much connected at higher revs.. Jmo: what was the effect of timing change? And how much did you adjust? ( i was thinking to try 2mm before tdc)

I just ordered s3 head so i'll fit that first and then play with ignition

I advanced only 1mm. Change was subtle. This was on an '03 that had weak low end, so it helped. A CDI from my '00 really woke it up.

I never use the sun mode on the map switch, the cables are separated under the seat...
But I wonder if it is possible to put the rain mode at the sun position and make a new mapping mode that is even more "rainy" at rain position.
Is this possible?
How will the bike act in the new rain mode?

You could do that by moving the stator plate. The sun/rain switch retards the entire ignition curve by a few degrees, igniting a few degrees later in the rain mode(I think). So you could move the plate a few mm counterclockwise ?, and then your sun mode would be the old rain setting, and rain would be a whole new rain mode. Although, thats normally the opposite to what people do, which is advance the timing a few degrees. It should work, I'm not entirely sure on the possible adverse affects of doing that.

I've got a little info on this in my thread S3 250 Cyl conversion. I will be having a look at advancing my timing some more to get some more angry into the bike.

Re the S3 head you mentioned earlier. Its not really a fix in terms of correcting squish. They use the same volume chamber with variable squish heights to increase compression. Same way you would with the stock head by machining the mating surface only. Issue is that you still can't get the squish where it needs to be without pushing the compression ratio through the roof!
