Fake Plate

I've been thinking of using an old plate on the back of my bike, just for looks. I have no plans to ever ride it on the street, but, it just looks legit if ever you have to ride down a section of road to get to another trail.

It occured to me that I could get in heap big trouble if that plate was not registered to me though, so I found an alternative....
I work for an electric utility and we put these little plates on all of our poles to mark them. It all of a sudden occurred to me, that plate would look HOT on the back of my bike. It's thin and long. Sort of like a Euro plate, so I dreamed up a random number and bolted it to the mudflap on the back of my bike, sideways. It looks totally cool, and it has no date, and no state, unless EWEB is a state somewhere in the world. It's even yellow, the same color as my state's MC plates. How fun is that?

Some years back, all that was required for enduros here was a "plate", or I should say all that was checked at tech. The common practice was to use an old plate from a road bike. Not really legal but unenforced, more like just an effort to look legal. Enduros are a different story where the cops involved are usually very cool and there are a lot of riders, I would not do that on the road in other situations.

We got pulled over before Xmas on a deadend road coming out of the woods near my brothers house. The cop (older guy, not a skinhead) was cool and just sent us on our way down the street after checking our paperwork. He could have gave us a lot of trouble. He told me my partially mud covered VT plate got his attention, imagine that over the obvious 2-stroke race bike! Also told me he hates quads tearing things up and that is the main target of enforcement.

Don't tell me you have a 3 phase clothesline at home too.

What exactly is the deal with registering in VT? do they by chance not need certain lights? anyone know the fees? i've searched can't find anything real exact.

btw, DE300

Jeff,

No, you can't. NJ has a master list of homolagated bikes, if your bike is not on it no registration, despite what your MSO says or does not say. This started in '07. In addition to street bikes, only true dual sports like the DRZ, KTM EXC and Husky TE can now be legally registered.

redrider,

Go to the VT DMV site and look around. It was a matter of filling out a couple forms and sending $$. Not sure if it has changed in the last year but I still renewed mine. Remember, you will not have an inspection sticker, just a registration. For me this and insurance was good enough.

It rains a lot in Oregon, no clothesline for me. Although, I've thought a 3 phase 12.47KV electric fence would be cool, especially with some of the strange traffic we get walking through our property. Nothing stolen, just litter, and some vandalism.

As do the turn signals. Consider it an embarrassment of titanic proportions when the dude on the "dual sport" bike motors on by whilst you are stuck.

My brother in law hates that mudflap and the turn signals. I think it makes the bike more invisible to the enforcement folks out on the system. If they see a plate and signals and I'm on some remote gravel road, they should have no reason to give me a second look.

P.S. I'm also keeping it secret (locally) that I have a Rekluse and a left hand rear brake. It works for me, so that's all that matters.

Whatever works for you. I put my plate in the same position, but with a much shorter plastic backing extender. No signals. Enduro legal only. I'll get the same set of cuffs put on me regardless.

I like the reasoning but seems to me since the bike is setup with signals as a legit street bike is, having a fake plate would be seen by cops as trying to get around having a legal plate and paying uncle sugar his money. Happy trails though

I cut my plastic at the little line that sticks out about 3" below the tailight. Bolted my plate to a 1/4 thick piece of rubber, then butted it up to the taillight with a couple of 1/4" bolts. Has endured everything I have thrown at it. Street legal? Eh, somewhat.

Hey Mike,
That plate looks so much larger than the legal oregon plate that mister officer is surely going to be curious and come after you to take a look.

I think you are better off putting a kid's bicycle plate on with your name on it - find the classic style plate with the deep yellow background. Also, with a children's plate no there - you can say your child gave it to you for christmas for your bike;

I just looked around the web and their are places that will make custom mc plates....

Thats exactly what I did. I don't think being sideways is an issue, as long as it is below the light and visible. Look at all the custom cruisers and sportbikes with side mounted plates.

In Pa the sideways plate is a big issue,, small town cops usually leave you alone but staties will get you on the side of the road.. I just got a warning since I only had my sxc a couple days.. the statie didnt think it was legal either.. I had no issues running my 250ec past several St troopers but 1st time I had my 625 out to get gas I got tailed by an unmarked car..

Those signals are just a little big,, I keep signals on all my bikes,, just to keep it looking legal.. but those are like the stockers off the sxc... I'd get the LED pointy ones that flex if you clip them and trash the stockers.. but you should trash them in a special box that goes usps to JT pa... I seam to loose a signal every ride..
