First day green laning

Hi all, I had my first ever day green laning and although it was a hard and very long first ride it was extremely fun.

However my bike was a little off. I had some coughing and spluttering. Pulling off was powerful but soon became flat and a little flat. I asked an other rider to ride it and he also said something doesn't feel right.

It is a gas gas ec250, 1999 running std sprocket size. 14 front and 48 rear. The carb has in 170 main and 38 pilot.
I was thinking maybe jet size.
What do you guys think?

The problem is usually the needle selection - most use a better needle in combination with a richer pilot.

Typically - you want to be 178 main and 42-ish pilot with a yamaha or suzuki needle. This may vary from country to country due to differing fuel characteristics. Are you running a good premium fuel?

Also, given the age of the bike - it wouldn't hurt to check the reeds and replace them if needed.

Thanks matey I will check the reeds tomorrow and order a better needle. I will get a 178 and a 42 as well. Like I say I am new to the whole off road and 2 stroke scene.

Today I fit a 42 pilot and a 178 main with the needle on position 3.
It ran awful. I then tried position 2 on the needle and the improvement was incredable. I thought I would try position 1 on the needle and response was massive. Acceleration was great. So happy with the improvement. However I can not sustain idle. Even when warm and idle screw is quite far in it still doesn't seem to want to idle without cutting out.
