First gasgas think i screwed up

I just bought a 1999 gasgas 300ec first dirtbike.I hoped on it and rode it a couple hours. I was researching how to change oil and i see this. Its just a hole no screw or threads but the side of tank looks black like its full of oil. I don't even see the 2nd hole to drain crankcase. I looked on forum can't find pics.

Thanks for the posts helped it was a vent hole for flywheel. Mud was covering up both drain plug and the front drain bolt

The hole with no screw is a vent hole....should be just like it appears....nothing to worry about. I asked the same thing on a different thread.

For the guys who quickly chip in and respond to these threads....thanks. Ive been riding street bikes for many years but this is my first off road bike....confidence level is low so when I ask a newbie question and guys are more than willing to reply it makes a big difference.

I would suggest taking the cover off and looking in there for corrosion on or around the stater. If the hole is plugged with mud moisture could be trapped in there and corrode parts.
 
The bike was in good condition. Every works and he said he rode the week prior but didn't have a chance to wash it. It started 2nd kick. Im gonna get some handlebar guards and new rear brake foot lever. I paid 450 for it.

At your earliest convenience you should try to remove the swingarm and service the bearings. This is often the most neglected part. Hopefully it's not too late.
If it is "too late", then you'll be faced with a major hassle to get it apart. Or you may decide to leave it as is (since you only paid $450). Check it out, though. You may get lucky and be able to "save" it.

I did this to my '01 XC200 when got it. It was way past due, but all parts were still usable. Worth the time and effort, highly recommended.

How can u check to see if it is going bad? If it fails what's the end result? Is this something anyone can do.
You need remove the swingarm to check the bearings and seals. Since you have it apart you should service or replace them. The seals can be replaced with o-rings (on most models).
If neglected, the bearings can seize and cut grooves into the swingarm pivot bolt and render it almost impossible to remove. Hopefully yours isn't that far gone.
It's not a fun job but anyone can do it. Remove the linkage and lower shock mount and anything else attached to the swingarm. Then drift the bolt out (being careful not to damage the threads). It often helps to loosen the rear motor mount as this can sometimes be putting pressure on the frame at the swingarm bolt and cause resistance.

This applies to all bikes, btw. I had an '84 XR500R that the bearings had grooved into the bolt and it would not come out, even with pounding on it with a big sledge hammer. I had to cut the swingarm and bolt off and replace them.
